Influenza seasonality: lifting the fog.

چکیده
S easonal variation in the incidence of communicable diseases is among the oldest observations in population biology, dating back at least to ancient Greece, yet our understanding of the mechanisms underlying this phenomenon remains hazy at best. Influenza is perhaps the seasonal disease of most profound interest, because it is responsible for much of the seasonal variation in other infectious and noninfectious causes of morbidity and mortality (1–4). Influenza virus activity displays strong seasonal cycles in temperate areas of the world and less defined seasonality in tropical regions (5), suggesting that environmental factors may drive seasonal patterns. In a recent issue of PNAS, Shaman and Kohn (6) move us a step closer to understanding influenza seasonality by clarifying the impact of environmental factors on influenza virus transmission and survival. The authors demonstrate an impressive statistical association between vapor pressure, influenza transmission, and virus survival.

Assessment of seasonality of influenza in swine using field submissions to a diagnostic laboratory in Ontario between 2007 and 2012
BACKGROUND Seasonality of any infectious disease is important for its control and monitoring. While influenza seasonality in people has been evaluated extensively, this question has not been studied well in swine populations. OBJECTIVE The goal of this study was to investigate seasonality of influenza in swine, using diagnostic submissions to a diagnostic laboratory. METHODS Two thousand se...
متن کاملModeling Seasonality in Avian Influenza H5n1
The number of cases of avian influenza in birds and humans exhibits seasonality which peaks during the winter months. What causes the seasonality in H5N1 cases is still being investigated. This article addresses the question of modeling the periodicity in cumulative number of human cases of H5N1. Three potential drivers of influenza seasonality are investigated: (1) seasonality in bird-to-bird ...
متن کاملDifferences in Influenza Seasonality by Latitude, Northern India
The seasonality of influenza in the tropics complicates vaccination timing. We investigated influenza seasonality in northern India and found influenza positivity peaked in Srinagar (34.09°N) in January-March but peaked in New Delhi (28.66°N) in July-September. Srinagar should consider influenza vaccination in October-November, but New Delhi should vaccinate in May-June.
متن کاملThe global transmission and control of influenza: Supporting Text 1
Here, we describe a new global model of influenza pandemics. The model includes 321 major cities on six continents, the airline travel among them, and influenza seasonality data when available. This model includes more detailed within-host influenza dynamics, more detailed influenza vaccine behavior, and more detailed seasonality data for tropical regions than other models. Nonetheless, it is a...
متن کاملGlobal Influenza Seasonality: Reconciling Patterns across Temperate and Tropical Regions
BACKGROUND Despite the significant disease burden of the influenza virus in humans, our understanding of the basis for its pronounced seasonality remains incomplete. Past observations that influenza epidemics occur in the winter across temperate climates, combined with insufficient knowledge about the epidemiology of influenza in the tropics, led to the perception that cool and dry conditions w...
